MATERIALS NEEDED:• (8) 3/8" electrical cable clamps
• (1) 6”x4’x½” piece of poplar (or your choice of lumber, a scrap piece of ½” plywood will work fine if you have any scraps lying around)
A note to those trying this project, I chose to use poplar wood and finished it with glossy black spray paint. I don't know if it was due to the rainy weather conditions or my paint choice but it made my final result look like crap, since I am all "o.c.d.-ish" and can't leave anything alone unless I like the the result, I will be starting this project from scratch with new lumber or repainting.
UPDATE: I decided to repaint the entire project using an interior latex paint. The end result is much more pleasing to me though it would have looked better had I never chose to use spray paint, live and learn.
BUILDING THE JIG
1. Cut the 7 pieces of wood
2. Calculate how many tie-downs you will be using and screw them down to the slider boards
3. Cut a track using your router or jig saw vertically down the center of the main board for the bolts to slide
4. Place your sliders on the main board, now glue the slider rails but be sure to test and make sure you can slide the slider all the way to the top and the bottom
I like the rig it's bad a**! I used your instructions to make myself one, now its so much easier to tie. On mine I only used 2 cable clips to be albe to tie a cobra stitch. I would like to but the other suff on mine but I dont know what they are for? How do you use the dowel post and the other cable clips? Also what is the reason of them being on opposite sides of each other in stead of straight across from one another? If you could help that would be great. Thanks!!
I was wondering if anyone else noticed that the dowels weren't straight across, unfortunately you spotted a mistake that I made when drilling the holes without having the slides in place. I intend to make another version and fix that mistake and probably add more to the design. I added extra clips to allow for different size buckles.
Other additions you should consider adding is an idea from Sam at http://tiedinknotz.blogspot.com/ which was to add a measuring system so that once the slides are extended you will already know how long the knot you are tying will be.
I used the dowels to tie knots that won't have a side release buckle attached. Say you wanted to tie Cobra Bar key chain, all you do is loop the top knot around the top dowel and loop the other ends around the bottom dowel and then slide the sliders apart to tighten the strands. I'll include photos of uses of the jig soon.
I have looked and can not find the read more button to get the plans. Could you please let me know how that I can obtain them? I am just starting out in the business and think that this woudl be a great idea.
